Unlike previous titles where players moved into an already-developed town, New Horizons was the first to start players on a completely deserted island alongside two random villagers.

New Horizons uses two currencies side by side — Nook Miles for tasks and collectibles, and Bells as the traditional currency for goods and services.

K.K. Slider's concert triggers the credits, marking the official 'end' of the game — though more island customisation options actually unlock after this point.

Swimming was added to expand the variety of creatures available beyond traditional fishing and insect catching.

Terraforming was added in response to players in previous games repeatedly resetting their towns just to get a desirable layout.

The Resident Representative is the only player who can initiate placement of villager housing plots and infrastructure such as stores, bridges, and inclines.

The player must also choose the museum plot location on this same first day, setting up Blathers' arrival.

Villagers move in one at a time — assuming all three initial houses have been built by day 5, it takes three more days for all spots to fill.
